WHY DO SCHOOLS NEED VOLUNTEERS?
Study after study has shown that student achievement improves when parents play an active role in their
child's education. Students are more likely to be motivated, to earn higher grades, to have better
behaviour and social skills, and to continue their education to a higher level when their parents are
actively engaged in supporting their success at school (excerpt from the Ontario Ministry of Education
website on Parent Engagement). Parent involvement takes many forms and volunteering in your child's school is an excellent way to get engaged and contribute to your child's education.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO VOLUNTEER?
You will need to make sure the office has a criminal reference check for you on file. This background check is
necessary for anyone spending time in schools or with students. To get one, visit HRPS Headquarters or any
District office to fill out the application. A $25 fee will apply.
WHAT CAN I DO?
If you want to lend a hand but aren’t sure how, we can change that! Join our Volunteer Committee and we will
take your help in the school during weekdays, at special events on evenings or weekends, with projects at
home or whenever there is a need. By joining the Volunteer Committee, we will invite you to join a Committee
and/or be on an email list to be contacted when there is a random need. Some examples of where volunteers
can help are: Dance-a- thon, special lunch days, help within the library, the annual Open House BBQ, the All-
Star Reading program or the Healthy Snack program. We can use assistance where and when it suits you –
daytime, evening, weekend or from home.
